Continuing/Community Education Policies and Procedures
Continuing/Community Education classes are open to the general public and extend beyond the range of Wallace State Community College’s regular instructional program. They do not carry credit applicable toward a Wallace State degree or transfer to other institutions.
Course fees are determined by the cost of the program which includes faculty salary, supplies, administrative support and facility usage. Other determining factors include class size and off campus programs.
Each Continuing/Community Education course will provide objectives to be accomplished in the course as provided in the course syllabus and measured by the course evaluation.
Courses are evaluated by written post course evaluations which cove three specific areas: course content and objectives, instructor knowledge and skills, and facilities. Completed evaluation forms are submitted to the WSCC Office of Planning and Assessment for electronic processing. Summary data is returned to Continuing/Community Education courses are evaluated as to satisfaction by the student. These evaluations are administered at the end of the course. In the event of unsatisfactory results, a plan of action to correct the deficiency is determined.
Continuing/Community Education Instructors are paid a standard rate of $18 per hour with the exception of more specialized courses which are paid at $20 per hour or on a percentage basis.
Registration must be made seven days prior to the first class session. If the minimum enrollment for a class is not met, the class will have to be cancelled. Registration is complete once payment has been received. Registration may be made by phone, fax, email or mail. Payment may be made by check, debit or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa). Payment may be made by phone or in person. Checks should be payable to Wallace State Community College.
Full refunds will be issued to all participants if Continuing/Community Education must cancel a class due to low enrollment. A check will be issued and mailed to the student.
To cancel a registration, students must contact the Continuing/Community Education Department at least 7 working days prior to the class in order to receive a full refund.
If the student cancels a registration less than 7 working days prior to the class tuition will not be refunded.
Refunds based on special circumstances must be requested in writing and are not guaranteed. Requests for refunds for special circumstances must be made within 7 days of the start date of class.
Students with disabilities who need accommodations are encouraged to call Lisa Harris at (256)352-8052 before registering.
In general, adult enrichment courses are designed for those students age 16 or older. Some courses mayaccept younger students but permission must be granted by the Dean of Institutional Outreach.
Continuing/Community Education classes are canceled only when Wallace State Community College is officially closed due to extenuating circumstances. If Wallace State is not closed, Community Education classes will meet as scheduled. Weather announcements are available on local television and radio stations.
Each course is carefully monitored to ensure sufficient enrollment to cover the cost of instruction and materials. If low enrollment occurs, cancellation decisions are made generally 48 hours prior to the beginning of a course and students will be notified.
Hang tags are required for all students and are made available for Continuing/Community Education students are in the office of Admissions.
