What is Academic Advising?

Academic advising is a one-on-one, on-going process between a student and a representative of the college. Academic advisors support students in their quest for a positive collegiate experience. Advisors assist students in the clarification of their education and career goals and the development of an education plan for achieving those goals. The advisor and the advisee have specific roles and responsibilities in the advising relationship.

 

How will advising help me?

Through the advising relationship students explore life goals as well as vocational goals. As goals are identified students begin the process of choosing a program of study or academic major. Advisors can work with students to determine course choice and provide assistance with the registration process.

Advising assist students to make full use of campus and community resources. Advisors will promote strategies that lead to success in the classroom as well as in extracurricular activities.


Am I required to meet with my advisor?

Yes! All students must meet with an advisor in order receive authorization to register online. You are not required to meet with your academic advisor every semester but it is highly recommended.


How are academic advisors assigned?

Upon application to the college all students are assigned a faculty advisor based upon their specified program of study.


How do I identify my academic advisor?

Students may call the Office of Admissions, the ACTION Advising Center, or view their degree plan to determine who their assigned advisor is.


How often should I meet with my academic advisor?

It is highly recommended that you maintain a relationship with your advisor. It is crucial that you meet with your advisor if you are considering a change of major, experiencing academic difficulty, considering dropping a course, and things of that nature.


Am I required to meet with an advisor if I change my major or program of study?

Students who make the decision to change their program of study must complete the required paperwork in the Office of Admissions. Students will be assigned a new academic advisor based upon the new program of study. It is important that students request the name of their new advisor at that time.
