What is Career Advising?

In career advising the emphasis is placed on assisting students in obtaining information and understanding the relationship between academic choices and general career fields. Advisors talk with students about the importance of considering personal interests, abilities, and values when making decisions regarding education and career choices. Making choices based on this knowledge may predict success in academic and career fields.

Do I need career advising if I have decided on a major or program of study?

All students need career advising. Many students beginning college have made a decision regarding their academic major and career fields of interest to them. They may not have based their decision on realistic information. Others may need information on connecting academic majors with career fields. Some students begin college undecided about a major or a career.

Who can assist me with career advising?

Initially, students should communicate with their assigned faculty advisor. Program advisors are an excellent resource for discussions regarding characteristics, traits, and abilities required to be successful in specific careers. As the process develops, some students may need additional assistance. Students may make an appointment with a career counselor in the ACTION Center for a more in-depth approach to career advising.
