The Wallace State baseball program continues to be a powerhouse in the state and on the national level under head coach Randy Putman. Since his arrival in Hanceville in 1990, Putman has recorded 21 consecutive winning seasons. He has posted an overall record of 798-302 at Wallace State while guiding his team to seven Alabama Community College Conference state championships, six Southeastern Regional Championships and six World Series appearances on the NJCAA Division I level.

Putman's success has been well recognized, as he has been named the ACCC Baseball Coach of the Year in 1992, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. He was also inducted into the Alabama Junior College Hall of Fame in 1991, the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Alabama Coaches Hall of Fame in January 2009.

Putman, originally from Birmingham, coached former big leaguers Jay Bell and Travis Fryman at Tate High School in Pensacola, Fla., before his tenure in Hanceville and has produced major league players at Wallace State, including former big leaguer Terry Jones, Texas Rangers' left-handed starter Derek Holland and Atlanta Braves rookie reliever Craig Kimbrel, who was the Braves Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2009.

Wallace State overcame a rash of injuries during the 2010 season and finished with a 26-22 record and another trip to the ACCC Tournament. The Lions were led by ace Ben Hawkins, closer Gil Walker and outfielder/designated hitter Matt Drake. Drake was selected to the ACCC All-Northern 1st team and the All-Region second team. Hawkins was a ACCC All-Northern second teamer.
