The Wallace State baseball program continues to be a powerhouse in the state and on the national level under head coach Randy Putman. Since his arrival in Hanceville in 1990, Putman has recorded 20 consecutive winning seasons. He has posted an overall record of 774-281 at Wallace State while guiding his team to seven Alabama Community College Conference state championships, six Southeastern Regional Championships and six World Series appearances on the NJCAA Division I level.

Putman's success has been well recognized, as he has been named the ACCC Baseball Coach of the Year in 1992, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 2001 and 2002. He was also inducted into the Alabama Junior College Hall of Fame in 1991, the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Alabama Coaches Hall of Fame in January 2009.

Putman, originally from Birmingham, coached former big leaguers Jay Bell and Travis Fryman at Tate High School in Pensacola, Fla., before his tenure in Hanceville and has produced major league players at Wallace State, including former major leaguer Terry Jones and Texas Rangers' left-handed rookie Derek Holland.

Wallace State finished 38-13 in 2009 and earned the second seed in the Northern Division after a 19-2 start to the season. The Lions, who were consistently ranked in the top ten nationally all season, had Dustin Lawley, Zac Taylor and Tyler Hannah named to the ACCC All-Region XXII First Team.
