Cheer Tryout Procedure

Tryouts for the 2009 -- 2010 team will be April 4, 2009. A mandatory clinic for tryout will be held on Wednesday, April 1 through Friday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. Tryouts and clinic will be held in the Wellness Center, Room 103A.

The main purpose of the tryout is to select the best overall representatives for Wallace State College. This factor, as well as demonstrated technical skills, aids the coach in choosing the best all-around members for the team. During the mandatory tryout clinic, the coach may make cuts, with the assistance of experience judges, until the final squad is selected.

The format of the tryout is that of a clinic where a progression of skills are taught by the coach and former WSCC cheerleaders. Participants are then given ample time and opportunity to practice and demonstrate the skills before cuts are made.

Although the required skills may vary from year to year, there are some requirements which are standard. Tumbling skills are a standing back handspring, standing back tuck, back handspring -back tuck, and a tumbling pass (three tricks or more). Stunt skill requirements are based upon past team members' abilities and overall talent level of participants. A toss extension, toss shoulder stand, and toss lib will be required, as well as a toss heel stretch with a full-down cradle.

The cheerleading program consists of up to twenty-four varsity members. Lion cheerleaders cheer for all men's and women's basketball games and comprise the national competition squad. The Wallace State cheerleading squad is one of the premier community college squads in the nation, and it has been ranked in the top five for the past seven years. The WSCC Cheerleaders won the UCA National Championship in 2004 and 2006 and placed second in 2005 and 2007.

Rob Metcalf became the coach of the Lions cheerleading program in 1995 and developed the team into a national competitor in 1998 when his squad took sixth place at Nationals. The Wallace State cheerleaders have remained dominant at the national level under his leadership. Metcalf will be returning eight cheerleaders to the 2007-2008 squad. The remainder of the 24 person team will consist of freshmen, and Metcalf will look to bring back another National Championship to Wallace State.

The exact number of scholarships varies from year to year. These are based on scores, need, and availability.

Additional Cost: WSCC provides cheerleaders with all uniforms and assists with travel expenses, practice clothing, camp cost, competition fees, and most other items required to fulfill their duties and perform at their best.

Academics First: Wallace State College provides tutors upon request to student-athletes in need. We also monitor each cheerleader's grades and will intervene when necessary. The student-athletes will receive assistance with scheduling difficulties and are excused from class during required athletic events.

Wallace State College cheerleaders are fortunate to have access to exceptional facilities, including a practice room with mirrored walls and a full competition floor. They also have use of the weight room, training rooms, and video facilities.
