Wallace State Soccer
In 2011, the Wallace State soccer program enters its sixth season under the leadership of head coach Barry Spitzer. Spitzer also served as an assistant coach for the Lions in 2005 before taking over the helm in 2006.
Spitzer has compiled a 75-15-4 record during his five years with the Lions. The team went 10-1-1 in 2010, posting three consecutive shutouts in early September, six during the season and outscoring its opponents 21-5 in the final six regular-season matches of the season.
Wallace State has the sophomore trio of forward Peter Martinez, goalie Drew Hannan and middle defender Garrison Brooks returning to the squad in 2011, along with a deep and talented freshman class.
Spitzer's squad is the lone junior college soccer team in Alabama. Wallace State has five former players competing for four-year institutions in 2011.
Spitzer is a two-time ACCC Region 22 Coach of the Year and has guided his teams to five NJCAA Region 22 championships and three District Finals. Additionally, his 2008 team was the NJCAA Academic Soccer Team of the Year, compiling the nation's best GPA during the fall semester.
Wallace State soccer had additions to its home field before the start of the 2009 season, including a new set of metal bleachers to accommodate approximately 200 people and a wooden structure to cover the benches and sidelines for both the Lions and their opponents.
Spitzer earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in 1992 and a Master's of Education in exercise physiology from the University of South Alabama in 1994.
