Behind the leadership of head coach Jayne Clem, the Wallace State Lady Lions fast pitch softball program is a national champion on the field and in the classroom, winning the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I National Championship.
During the 2010 season, Wallace State continued its dominance in the state and on the national level. The Lady Lions won their fourth consecutive Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) tournament title and finished as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) runner-up for the second straight year.
Individually in 2010, ace Kelsey Dennis finished a remarkabale 31-1 with 0.73 ERA, stiking out 250 batters in 211 2/3 innings. Dennis was named a NJCAA First-Team All-American for the second straight season.
Shortstop Saige Wright was a NJCAA third-team member after hitting .327 average and posting a team-best 47 runs scored and 43 stolen bases.
Additionally, Dennis, Wright and outfielder Katie Pierce were named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American team.
During the school's dominant three-year run to the NJCAA Division I title game, Wallace State has compiled a 193-27 record (68-8 in 2008, 63-10 in 2009 and 62-9 in 2010), captured three ACCC championships and produced six combined NJCAA 1st-Team All-Americans.
The Lady Lions were also ACCC champions in 2007, 2005 and 2003.
Wallace State's softball team has excelled academically as well. The team finished with a 3.68 grade point average for the 2009-10 academic year after posting a 3.72 GPA as the 2008-09 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.
Fast pitch softball at Wallace State dates back to 1997 and has been led by Coach Clem since 1999. Clem is committed to a winning tradition at Wallace State, and that drive is evident in her teams' accomplishments.
She reached the 500-win plateau in 2010, winning her 500th career game early in the season. In Clem's 11 seasons, the Lady Lions are 550-139 (.798 winning percentage). Clem has been named ACCC Coach of the Year nine times (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002) and she has helped the school win six conference championships along with its 2008 national crown.
