
Sigma Kappa Delta was formed under the auspices of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society serving four-year institutions. Sigma Kappa Delta was created April 21, 1996, in Chicago Illinois. The organization was incorporated in 1996 in the state of Missouri as a non-profit educational entity. Its central purpose is to confer distinction upon outstanding students of the English language and literature in undergraduate studies. Sigma Kappa Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.
The name of Sigma Kappa Delta comes from the Greek letters representing the first letter of each of the words that form the offical motto, "Sincerity, Knowledge, and Design" The offical colors of the society are green and gold; the offical plant is English Ivy. The offical seal appears on all office documents of the Society.
Through the work of chapters on the campuses of two year institutions throughoutthe United States, Sigma Kappa Delta provides exceptional students opportunitiesfor advancing the study of language and literature, for developing skills in creativeand analytical writing, and for meeting other outstanding scholars andprofessionals in the discipline of English.
Membership
Active members must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a two-year college with a Sigma Kappa Delta Chapter
- Have completed a minimum of one college course (excluding developmental courses) in English language or literature
- Have no grade lower than a B in English
- Have minimum grade point average of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) in general scholarship
- Have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college course work for a cumulative total of twelve semester hours
- Students are not required to be English majors
