The Sallie Mae Fund sponsors several scholarship programs and supports hundreds of college scholarships. All of our programs are based on financial need, as The Fund seeks to bridge the dollar gap when no one else can. With an estimated $3 billion in private scholarships awarded nationally each year, The Fund aims to send the message that money is available to those who make the effort to apply. Since 2001, The Sallie Mae Fund has awarded more than $12.7 million in scholarships to more than 5,000 students.
For the 2007–2008 academic year, $2.5 million in college scholarships were awarded to more then 1,000 students nationwide.

Brookwood Medical Auxillary, Inc. -- Healthcare-Related Scholarship
Applicants must be of high moral character, must be enrolled in an undergraduate program of health care-related studies in an accredited college within the state of Alabama and must have at least two (2) semesters of college remaining. The completed application, letters of recommendation, essay and official transcript must be in the office of the Brookewood Medical Auxiliary, Inc. by June 1, 2011. Absolutely NO late information will be accepted.
Washington Family Scholars Program
The award is designed to mentor and encourage young, potential scientists and physicians to enter the field of neurological research. The Washington Family is passionate about supporting the dreams of young adults in the field of science.

American Chemical Society
Chemistry Scholarships for African American, Hispanic, and American Indian Students
ACS awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter the fields of chemistry or chemistry-related fields. Awards of up to $5,000* are given to qualified students based on academic standing, financial need, career objective, leadership skills, and involvement in school activities and community service.
If you are an African American, Hispanic, or American Indian high school senior or college freshman, sophomore, or junior pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology, you may be eligible.

American Cancer Society

Has a national network of employees and volunteers who implement research, education, and patient service programs. Although programs differ according to state and province, some widely available programs are patient-to-patient visitation, transportation to appointments, housing near treatment centers, equipment and supplies, support groups, literature on a large variety of topics, summer camps for children with cancer, research and educational programs.
The Gilman Scholarship Program
Offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, this congressionally funded program is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, TX.

Alumni Association Scholarships
The Alumni Association will award four $500 scholarships for the 2009-2010 year. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework at WSCC; Must be a full-time student at the time of application and maintain at least half-time status to retain the scholarship; Must have a 2.5 or higher GPA; and Volunteer in the Alumni Office once per semester during the year to assist with alumni events.
Future Foundation Scholarships
The Foundation promotes equity accessibility and excellence in education. The Future Foundation's most important goal is to provide scholarships to students whose educational needs cannot be met by their current resources. Through private giving, various scholarship funds have been established to help meet these needs.
Leadership in Child Care Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial assistance (tuition and selected fees) to qualified child care professionals working in child care centers/programs, and family and group homes to obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, Short-Term Certificate, Certificate, or Associate in Applied Science/Technology Degree in Child Development/Early Care and Educational studies. Scholarship recipients must reside and work in Alabama.
National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Student Loan Repayment
The National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program provides up to $50,000 (or the outstanding balance of loans if less), tax free, to primary care medical, dental and mental health clinicians in exchange for two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area.
Linly Heflin Scholarship
The Linly Heflin Scholarship Committee grants four year scholarships in the amount of $3000 per year to a limited number of Alabama women who have both significant economic need and a sound academic record. Applications can be downloaded at linlyheflin.org
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

Applicants, who wish to be considered must meet GPA requirements, have completed an admission application to the transferring school, and plan on enrolling at that school for the Fall 2010 term.
Quick Facts about these awards:
- University of Alabama – this is a $10,000 scholarship (for up to four semesters) and will be awarded to 1 graduate of WSCC. GPA requirement is 3.0.
- Jacksonville State University – this scholarship will be awarded to 4 students of WSCC. GPA requirement is 3.5. This award pays full in state tuition (up to 16 hours per term) for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011.
- UAB Honors Scholarship – this scholarship will be awarded to 1 student of WSCC. GPA requirement is 3.5.
- University of West Alabama – this scholarship will be awarded to 8 students of WSCC. GPA requirement is 3.0.
- University of Montevallo – this scholarship will be awarded to 1 student of WSCC. GPA requirement is 3.25.
Transfer Scholarship Packets are available in the Financial Aid Office. The completed packet must be turned in to the Financial Aid Office no later than February 22nd, 2011 at 4:00 pm. The deadline for the UAB Honors Scholarship will be February 15th, 2011, 4:00pm.
The scholarship packet must include the following items:
- Cover letter to Wallace State Community College President, Dr. Hawsey requesting consideration for the award
- WSCC transcript
- Two letters of reference
- Scholarship application
- Resume’ stating activities, community service, work experience, honors and awards
New Scholarships Announced for LPN Students
The Alabama Community College System has announced a new scholarship program for licensed practical nursing students attending community colleges.
Each of the 22 two-year schools that offer LPN training will receive two $1,000 scholarships each year from the Alabama Nursing Home Association Education Foundation. Staff at each school will choose the scholarship recipients. To be eligible, students must have completed one semester of the LPN program with a GPA of at least 2.5 and be enrolled for the next semester. They must also do some of their clinical work in long-term care.
The scholarships will be available starting with the fall 2008 semester.

- The Mensa Foundations Scholarship Programs are accepting applications through January 15, 2010. The U.S. program is open to any college-bound student living in the geographic area of a participating Mensa group. American Mensans, you and your IRS-recognized dependents may apply for the Mensa Member Award Program, which awards four scholarships each year. The international program is open to Mensans from other countries and their dependents.
