HIT 113 Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology (5 hrs.)
This course is an introduction to the structure and function of anatomical body systems and the language of medicine. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology and be able to spell, define, pronounce and correctly use a number of medical terms and abbreviations.

HIT 115 Pathophysiology and Pharmacology for HIT (4 hrs.)
This course is a detailed study of common pathological conditions and the drugs of choice used in their treatment. Course focus is on description of conditions and diseases of the organ systems including etiology, signs and symptoms, methods of diagnosis, and treatment. Expected student outcomes include ability to analyze signs and symptoms in identifying disease entities and ability to describe appropriate diagnostic and treatment modalities.

MTR 170 Basic Medical Transcription (3 hrs.)
This course introduces transcription equipment and typical medical dictation. Emphasis is placed on efficient use of equipment, use of reference materials, correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling, editing, proofreading, and report formatting. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in transcribing physician dictation.

MTR 171  Grammar Essentials for MT (1 hr.)
This course provides learning experiences that will develop the grammar and essential skills necessary for the medical transcriptionist to generate a complete document that correctly utilizes general rules of English.  The focus will be to foster skills in correctly using punctuation and grammar, appropriate sentence structure and proper subject/verb agreement.  Students will apply skills learned by editing documents to meet appropriate AHDI standards.

MTR 270 Advanced Medical Transcription (3 hrs.)
This course involves word processing of highly complex medical reports common to acute care and other health care facilities.  Emphasis is placed on speed and accuracy of medical transcription.  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate speed and competence in transcribing physician dictation.

MTR 271 Clinical Medical Transcription (4 hrs.)
This course includes laboratory or on-site medical transcription practice. This course allows the student to demonstrate advanced competencies acquired in previous medical transcription course work. Student competency includes demonstrated medical transcription proficiency.

MTR 272 Expanded Medical Transcription (2 hrs.)
This course provides students with the opportunity to practice medical transcription skills with actual reports from multiple practice sites. The course requires the student to demonstrate advanced competencies acquired in previous medical transcription courses. Upon completion, the student will demonstrate medical transcription proficiency in many different medical specialty areas.

MTR 273  Medical and Legal Introduction to Healthcare (2 hrs.)
In this course, students will learn to understand the format, content, purpose and legal aspects of healthcare records.  Students will gain general knowledge of standards and regulations for healthcare documents, including HIPAA and risk management.  Students will be required to thoroughly understand and apply the AHDI Code of Ethics.  Competencies are applied throughout the course in the Medical Transcription Practice content area.

MTR 274  Diagnostics and Pharmacology for the MT (2 hrs.)                      
This course will complement HIT 115 by educating students on common physical exam and diagnostic procedure findings in correlation to common disease states.  Common exam and laboratory findings are taught as well as the significance of abnormal findings.  Properly expressing the results of physical exams and various diagnostic studies in health records is emphasized.  This course will also develop in more depth the pharmacologic principles introduced in HIT 115.

MTR 275 Introduction to Computers in Transcription (2 hrs.)
This course is a survey of computer usage in transcription with emphasis on software applications and data security and integrity in health information systems. Course instruction focuses on concepts of computer usage in transcription with experience using various software packages. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the use of various transcription specific software applications.

MTR 291 CO-OP for Medical Transcription (3 hrs. )
This course profides work experience with a college approved employer in the medical transcription field. Emphasis is placed on integrating classroom learning with related work experience. Upon completion, students should be able to evaluate career selection, demonstrate employability skills, and satisfactorily perform medical transcription competencies.
