NEW AUTHORIZATION MEANS GED TEST NOW OFFERED AT HALF PRICE FOR QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS

Category: Headlines, October 2009

HANCEVILLE -- Students interested in taking the GED Test at Wallace State Community College and other Department of Education funded locations around the state may now qualify to do so at half the previous cost.

The Alabama Adult Education and Family Literacy Plan recently authorized Interim Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System Joan Davis to use state appropriated adult education funds to defray the cost of GED Test fees for adult education students in non-institutionalized settings. This development came as a result of the recommendations by a state Adult Education committee chaired by Wallace State Adult Education Director Kelley Blackwood.

With the equivalency diploma, adult education students will be better prepared to enter the workforce postsecondary education or training.

“This will help a lot of folks without jobs afford the GED test fees,” said Blackwood.

Currently, the test fee for individuals taking the test for the first time is $50.  Beginning on October 1, 2009, this fee will be cut in half: eligible students will pay only $25 to take the GED Test.  The remaining $25 will be paid from state appropriated adult education funds.

To be eligible to participate in this program, an adult education student must:

·         be currently enrolled in a DPE-funded adult education program (GED Preparation class);

·         be pre-tested on an approved adult education assessment instrument (e.g. TABE) (this test is given during GED preparation classes);

·         have received at least 30 hours of instruction (these are clock hours and can be made within a month);

·         be post-tested with an approved, parallel adult education assessment instrument (this test is also given during GED preparation classes);

·         have attained a standard score of 500 or greater on each part of the Official GED Practice Test (the Official Practice Test is offered at various locations each month for free); and

·         never have been administered the GED Test in whole or in part.

GED Test Prep Classes are offered through Wallace State Adult Education on campus and at a variety of locations in Cullman, southern Morgan, Winston and Blount Counties.  The GED test is currently offered at Wallace State and at the new Blount County Adult Learning Center in Oneonta.
