Admission Requirements and Curriculum (catalog)

AWARD OFFERED Certificate (5 Semesters), Associate in Applied Science Degree (6 Semesters)

The Electronic Technology program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the electronics field with a solid foundation for early advancement and promotion. Teaching is accomplished by lecture and demonstration in the classroom as well as interactive computer programs and laboratory experimentation. Lab assignments involve experiments directly related to information covered in lectures as well as troubleshooting, maintenance and repair.

Graduates from the Electronic Technology program are electronic technicians and are qualified to enter any of the computer, industrial, communications or biomedical areas depending on the options selected. From the robotics that put automobiles together to medical equipment to communication devices, a firm knowledge of electronics will ensure a promising future in almost any advanced technical field.

Examples of jobs in this industry include Electronic Engineer, Electronics Technician, Maintenance Technician, Engineering Technician, Biomedical Technician, Computer Technician and Network (IT) Coordinator.

Depending on the specialty selected, graduates will design electrical and circuit machinery, repair circuit boards and equipment, maintain and repair robotic equipment, maintain electronic equipment used in the healthcare field, and repair, build and maintain personal computers or computer networks.

Opportunities will be best for individuals with an associate’s degree or extensive job training in electronics technology. As technology becomes more sophisticated, employers will continue to look for those who are skilled in new technology and require a minimum of additional job training.

Median annual earnings for individuals in the field in 2004 ranged from $20.48 to $25.86 per hour, with the highest 10 percent of electronics technicians earning more than $33.82. (Source: U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics)
