Wallace State basketball teams sweep Enterprise State in home openers

HANCEVILLE - Wallace State’s basketball teams swept Enterprise State in their home openers on Saturday at Traditions Bank Arena at Tom Drake Coliseum.

Sophomore guard Jiselle Woodson poured in a career-high 31 points, and the 21st-ranked Lady Lions capitalized on a strong third quarter, rolling to an 82-55 victory.

In coach Allen Sharpe’s first home game in 11 years as Wallace State's men's head coach, the Lions held off a late Enterprise State rally, securing a 58-57 triumph.

Wallace State women

Woodson has picked up where she left off last season when she was an ACCC North Division 2nd-team and ACCC All-Tournament selection as a freshman.

Woodson went 11-for-17 from the field against the Lady Boll Weevils, including hitting three 3-pointers. She added six rebounds and four steals.

Freshman Destiny Garrett came off the bench for Wallace State, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Fairview grad Payton Golden scored 11 points for Wallace State and Olivia Howard added eight points.

The Lady Lions, which surpassed the 100-point mark against Enterprise State on Jan. 20, nursed a 25-22 lead at the break. They pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Boll Weevils, 25-12.

Men’s game

Wallace State’s men notched their second win against Enterprise State in a four-day span, prevailing in coach Allen Shape’s home debut during his second stint with the program.

Kuran Garner led Wallace State with 15 points, including hitting clutch free throws in the closing seconds. The sophomore guard from Huntsville is among the Lions’ returners, and he was the leading scorer last season.

Tyler Hutchieson scored 11 points for the Lions, Jahvon Sims had eight and Zion Fluellen pitched with six.

Wallace State defeated the Boll Weevils by 21 points in the season opener behind four players in double figures. Garner paced the team with 18 points and eight assists, De’Monte Nelson scored 15 points, Rafael Jenkins had 14 and Miguel Miranda added 13 points off the bench.

Both Wallace State teams host Chatthoochee Valley on Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
