HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College’s Center for Career and Workforce Development is launching an Industrial Maintenance Pre-Apprenticeship program beginning with the Summer 2021 semester.

Students enrolling in Wallace State’s Electronics Technology program are eligible for the program during their first semester at the college.

“We’re excited because this pre-apprenticeship program is approved by the Alabama Office of Apprenticeships and one of the few in the state. It’s a big deal,” said Christina Holmes, Wallace State’s Apprenticeship and Work-Based Learning Coordinator. “We believe pre-apprenticeship programs offer highly reliable and effective talent pipelines to American industry partners and one of our goals is to effectively prepare our students for the workforce.”

Industrial Maintenance Mechanics are among the many in-demand advanced manufacturing jobs, offering more competitive wages and career pathways for workers with a wide variety of education and skills. It uses innovative technology and usually requires fewer low-skilled workers than traditional manufacturing because many repetitive, manual labor processes have been automated.

Pre-apprentices who enroll in the program are encouraged to complete coursework in Concepts of Direct Current, Concepts of Alternating Currents and a MSCC Safety Course. They can earn one or more short-term certificates and multiple industry-recognized credentials based on the number of courses they choose to take.

Through the program, pre-apprentices will participate in instruction for 4-8 hours, two days per week per semester, with technical courses taught in labs closely mimicking the advanced manufacturing environment.

Each pre-apprentice will also have access to several forms of career counseling, professional development and support services across campus.
